Collaboration leads to an energy boost in solar cells

Researchers from the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering at ASU are joining forces with their colleagues at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to develop advanced, more efficient solar panels.

The team led by UIUC includes ECEE’s Zachary Holman, Zhengshan (Jason) Yu and William Weigand. The band of electrical engineers developed a technique that layers gallium arsenide phosphide on traditional silicon solar cells, boosting power generation by 1.5 times. Eventually, this development could reduce the cost of solar power to companies and consumers. 

The group’s findings are detailed in their paper published in the journal Cell Reports Physical Sciences.
