SenSIP REU students excel in research and academics

Professor Andreas Spanias has been hosting as PI the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) in the Sensor Signal and Information Processing (SenSIP) Center for (2017-2023).  Professor Jennifer Blain Christen is the Co-PI on the grant and Wendy Barnard as the evaluator.

These research experiences have led students to learn more about research, graduate programs, and how to be successful in their future careers. Over the past year, three students have graduated and received awards. These students were participants in SenSIP REU research funded by NSF award 1659871.

Karla Cosio, Electrical Engineering BSE, Spring 2022 Impact Award Recipient

Karla earned her Electrical Engineering BSE degree in the spring 2022 semester and was an Impact Award Recipient because of her outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements. Karla was advised by Dr. Ewaisha and co-advised by Dr. Spanias and PhD student V.  Narayanaswamy.  She completed an honors thesis through Barrett, The Honors College while completing her bachelor’s degree. Michael Esposito, Biological Sciences (Genetics, Cell and Developmental Biology) BS, Spring 2022 Barrett Honors College Outstanding Student for Research

Michael completed a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences (Genetics, Cell and Developmental Biology) and was named this year’s Barrett Honors College Outstanding Student for Research. Michael’s REU research topic was “Covid-19 Detection using Cough Audio Features and Neural Nets.” He is co-author of two IEEE conference papers and a provisional patent. Michael was mentored by Dr. Spanias and his PhD students S. Rao and G. Uehara. His research was also sponsored by SenSIP I/UCRC Quantum Machine Learning Projects. Matthew Dobson, Electrical Engineering BSE, Fall 2021 Outstanding Graduate and Impact Award Recipient

Matthew Dobson completed his Electrical Engineering BSE degree in the fall 2021 semester. He was selected as the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineer’s Outstanding Graduate and also received an Impact Award due to his outstanding achievements in his academics and extracurriculars. His SenSIP REU research topic was “Quantum Machine Learning for Imaging.” His research was also sponsored by SenSIP I/URC Quantum Machine Learning Projects.
