How to register a team
Example hero paragraph text.
Step 1: Registering accounts for coaches, mentors and team administrators
Creating an account gives you access to the FIRST® Dashboard, where you can create a new team, accept an invitation to join a team as an administrator or mentor/coach, purchase supplies, create an alumni profile, join the FIRST® Mentor Network and browse available event volunteer opportunities and roles. FIRST® requires lead coach/mentors, mentors, team members, volunteers and staff to be electronically registered.
Every team must have two coaches with completed background checks. On the FIRST® Dashboard, there will be options for completing your background registration free of charge through a third party. After submitting, it takes approximately two days for this to update on your dashboard. You will not be able to invite parents/guardians (step three below) until you have completed the YPP screening.
The FIRST® Dashboard is a multi-functional system. Lead coaches and team administrators can manage different teams across all programs via the “MY TEAMS” tab on the Dashboard. Lead coaches who are also parents of youth team members can manage the youth registration process for their children on the “PARENT/GUARDIAN – YOUTH” tab.

Below is a list of the primary contact roles for a team and the administrative permissions:
- Lead coach 1: Has full administrative ability and manages all team contacts.
- Lead coach 2: Has full administrative ability but cannot invite the lead coach 1 or the team administrator.
- Team administrator: Has limited administrative ability.
- Manages team profile and can make payments.
- Can add/remove coaches.
- Cannot invite youth or mentors.
- Cannot view the youth portion of the roster.
- Cannot register for events.
- Mentor: This role is for mentors who are 18+ years of age.
- Youth Mentor: This role is for mentors between 13–17 years of age.
Register your new FIRST® account here.
Once this is complete, you will be able to send requests to parents and guardians to complete their students’ consent and release forms.

Once you have created a team, you will be assigned a team number. This number will be yours as long as your team exists, and it can not be changed. The team name, however, can be changed as often as you want after the team has been created and registered. You can create and coach multiple teams across all FIRST® programs.
To register your team, you will pay the registration fee. Costs for starting a FIRST® LEGO® League team vary depending on the division and level of participation. Effective for the 2025–2026 season, FIRST® LEGO® League registration fees for teams in the U.S. and Canada will increase. Additionally, costs for some products purchased through the FIRST® Dashboard will also increase.

Step 3: Inviting parents and legal guardians
FIRST® requires lead coach/mentors, mentors, team members, volunteers and staff to be electronically registered. Express enrollment is a registration system that provides a simplified experience on mobile and desktop to register parents, legal guardians and youth members for teams based in the U.S. and Canada. Lead coaches only invite youth members who are 18 years old or older and can legally sign their consent form. For youth members who are 17 years old and under, which is always the case for FLL, the lead coach must send the express enrollment invitation/QR code directly to the parents/guardians to complete.
FIRST® lead coaches can generate web links or QR codes in the FIRST® Dashboard to share with parents and guardians of their youth participants, granting access to the application. Instructions on how the lead coach will generate a link/QR code can be found here.
Parents and guardians then use the web link or QR code from the lead coach to register their youth to a team in a few simple steps. Instructions on how parents and legal guardians will complete the registration can be found here. Parents/guardians must register themselves first. They will then be able to add their child and apply to a team. Every youth team member needs to have a unique email address, meaning it cannot already exist within the registration system. In other words, the parent/guardian and the youth cannot use the same email address.
Once the parents/legal guardians apply their youth to the team, lead coaches will need to go back to the team contacts page to accept or decline the youth team members listed as “applied pending” by selecting the “options” menu on their contact card. Approved team members will be reflected on the team’s printable roster.
Parents/guardians can manage the youth registration process for their youth participants on the “PARENT/GUARDIAN-YOUTH” tab.

Step 4: Registering youth team members
FIRST® requires all youth team members to register. Youth team members who have not registered will not be permitted to participate in FIRST® remote and in-person team meetings, events or competitions. Youth team member registration can be completed through express enrollment application and is for youth team members who have been invited to an existing team. If you have not received an invitation, please follow up with your youth’s lead coaches.
Every youth team member needs to have a unique email address, meaning it cannot already exist within the registration system. In other words, the parent/guardian and the youth cannot use the same email address.
A complete overview of the youth registration system can be found in the FIRST® resource library.
